Bert Rood painted his first canvas at fifty-six, during a period of rehabilitation. Ten years on, the colour still breaks out from the heart of the canvas in every direction.

He draws as well, and there the opposite applies. With a fineliner he sets dot after dot until an image appears that he could not have planned. Where the paint is exuberant, the pen is patient.
